Leaps and Bounds: From Reading Words to Understanding Texts

We report here on a study designed to investigate the effects of oral language skills on the development of reading comprehension across the elementary grades. We measured awareness of phonology, prosody, morphology and syntax at Grade 1. We examine the effects of each of these skills on children’s reading comprehension at Grade 4. We also describe some of our work in identifying how each of these factors affects reading outcomes.
