Daniela’s research uses computational models of language in different applications. One such application is to help create language technologies for Plains Cree, an Indigenous language. High-resource languages, such as English and French, enjoy various language technologies such as predictive text, text-to-speech, and machine translation. However, these technologies are limited for Plains Cree due to the scarcity of language materials required to create language models. Through developing models for Plains Cree, language technologies can be created to assist speakers in learning and using their language. Another application that Daniela is working on uses language models that are meant to capture different aspects of language, such as syntax and semantics. By analyzing these factors, we can further understand their role in incremental reading for native and non-native English speakers.
