Susan Rvachew’s research is concerned with the development and integration of speech perception, speech production, phonological and emergent literacy skills during the period infancy through early school age. She also studies the nature of speech delay and the efficacy of speech interventions. She developed several digital apps to assess and treat speech, language and literacy delays in young children and consulted with industry partners to improve digital books for children. Recently she and her students have been investigating gender differences in early reading acquisition, and especially the impact of digital media on boys’ engagement with text and narrative. Through the SSHRC PG, Susan is keen to undertake more specific research into the relative benefits of particular multimedia supports for reading acquisition that are embedded into learning games and educational software.
